“I thought we were in network?”

I recently had a patient reach out asking about a bill they received. Now this was nothing out of the ordinary as I frequently receive questions about bills - it’s in my job description. Money is a sensitive subject, so I often approach these situations kindly yet logically.

After telling the patient this bill was a copay amount, I was met with radio silence. I let them know that this amount is listed on the front of their insurance card and sent an image of it for reference. I received no communication from the patient after clarification of the bill - not even a thank you.

There is a severe lack of education in the American healthcare insurance system. This conversation, and many more, is what spurred creation of WellthWise. Through educational classes and individual consultations, I hope to give patients the resources they need to take control of their healthcare financial literacy.
